Each year, the American Red Cross helps families and communities recover from disasters both big and small. We train people to save lives, we connect military families when they need it most, and the blood that we collect from our donors helps accident victims, cancer patients and people with blood disorders. Whether it be a hurricane, or a heart attack, American Red Cross volunteers are ready to go to work, helping when and where it is needed most.
We are a powerful network of over 90,000 trained disaster workers, 322 emergency response vehicles, 56,000 potential shelter sites and 26 warehouses stocked with disaster supplies able to serve 1,000,000 people in a single day. Each year, we help an average of 150,000 military families and veterans prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. We are the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. And we are the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.
We believe that at the heart of the Red Cross is what lives in in the hearts of all of us: the innate desire to help change the life of another, and in the process, change our own. We are simply the vessel through which people are given the opportunity to perform extraordinary acts: through our volunteer training, our blood drives, and our health and safety courses, we empower people to become the helping hand to those in need when disaster strikes.
