Frequently Asked Questions
For Hosts and Gift Recipients
For Gift Givers
- What is Clover by Clover?
Clover by Clover has created a simple online tool that enables group giving and gift sharing, making celebrations more meaningful, more convenient, and even more environmentally conscious. Each year in the United States, we spend over $20 billion on toys and another $250 billion on gift items such as scented candles, novelty mugs, frames, gift wrap, gift bags, tape and bows. Imagine a world where even a small percentage of these sums was diverted to great causes – and where those celebrating still received exactly what they wanted! A Page is a convenient, Earth-friendly, and philanthropic way to make gift-giving more meaningful for everyone; those celebrating indicate a special gift they really want and also share a percentage of their gift proceeds with a great cause.
- What is a page?
A page is a personalized web page that shares a favorite photo, details about one special gift you really want, and information about a non-profit organization you have chosen to share a percentage of your gift proceeds with — your cause. It also features a Guest Book where guests may leave comments. An easy-to-follow page Wizard walks users through the simple set-up, and they can create a page in a matter of minutes. They then can invite their guests, friends and family to give gifts to their page instead of bringing a physical gift to their event.
- How does a page work?
When event guests, friends and family visit your page, they can see both your description of your special gift, as well as information about your cause and the percentage of gifts you have chosen to share with it. With a simple click, they can give their gifts using their credit cards. At the end of the event, total gifts collected (net of handling fees) are distributed as follows: the dollar amount collected for the special gift will be disbursed to the gift recipient (or the individual responsible for purchasing the gift) and the percentage of gifts being shared is distributed to the chosen cause – the cause. So, if John has described a $75 toy that he has his heart set on, decides to share 75% of his gifts with a non-profit, and receives $300 worth of gifts (net of handling fees) through his page, the cause John chose will receive $225 and John's mom will receive a check for $75 to buy his special present. With a page, the person celebrating will get exactly what he or she wants, and a great cause will be helped in the process.
- What is a cause?
Causes are non-profit organizations we have carefully selected that you can share your celebration with. We want you to know that your celebration really is making a difference, and that the funds that you are sharing are not going to overhead or fancy fundraisers. We have partnered with organizations that do wonderful things for those in need all over the world. You probably recognize many, if not all, of the names and are familiar with the important and world-changing work that they do.
- What if the cause I really want to help is not yet a cause?
We encourage you to let us know about great causes you would like to see on Clover by Clover: we will do our best to include them! However, adding a new cause takes time: we work closely with our causes to ensure we are accurately presenting their mission, efficiently delivering funds and donor information, and properly illustrating the way your celebration can support the important work they do.
- What does a page look like?
It's cute, fun, and personalized by you. See a sample here.
- What is the handling fee?
Every gift includes a handling fee of 10% of your gift amount, with a minimum charge of $2.50. This fee covers not only our credit card processing and transaction processing fees, but also all of our other expenses involved in building and maintaining this convenient on-line tool, working with our causes to continually improve their presence on our safe and secure site, and making sure that both gift recipients and causes receive funds as quickly and efficiently as possible. And...we hope that this fee is a lot less than the typical gift giver would spend on sales tax, gift-wrap, a greeting card, and a trip to the mall!
- Why should I create a page for my special occasion?
A page allows you to thoughtfully and respectfully ask guests to contribute to a special gift you really want, perhaps something that costs a little more than one guest would be willing to pay. At the same time, you will be making life a little bit easier for your guests and you'll be reducing the (often non-recyclable!) waste that is so often generated by special celebrations. And…you also will be helping great causes by agreeing to share a percentage of the gifts you receive to your page!
- Why should I ask my guests to give to a page, instead of bringing a gift to the party? Won't they feel “empty-handed” when they come to my celebration?
No! You are providing a convenient way for your guests to participate in your celebration. After all, they won't need to rush to the mall at the last minute to buy a gift, wrap that gift in expensive gift-wrap or travel to yet another store to purchase the accompanying card. They won't have to wonder whether the gift is what you really wanted. And the best part is that while they are celebrating with you, they will feel good knowing that your celebration is benefiting a great cause. And, they can still bring a home-made card, or download and print a customizable one for you here.
- How do I create a page?
It's simple. An easy-to-follow Page Wizard walks you through the simple set-up, and you can create your page in a matter of minutes. You name your event, upload a favorite photo, describe the one special gift you'd like to receive, and choose a cause with which to share a percentage (determined by you) of your gifts.
- What happens after I set up my page?
After you've created your page, you will receive an email from Clover by Clover confirming your successful page creation. At that time, you'll be provided with a number of different ways (email, Facebook, custom URL to include on the invitation, etc.) to share your page with your guests. Your guests will be able to search for your event on cloverbyclover.com, give gifts to your page and leave comments in your Guest Book. You can keep tabs on your page at all times to check the status of gifts received and read comments in your Guest Book.
- How do I close my page and what happens once I close it?
Only the person who creates the page has the authority to close it. When you are logged into your account, you will see a tab labeled ‘close' when you view an open page. Once you close that page, any gift proceeds (net of handling fees) will be distributed as follows:
- the percentage of gifts you have chosen to share with your cause will be distributed to the cause in the form of a physical check; and
- the remainder of gift proceeds will be issued to the you (or someone you designate) in the form of a physical check.
At that time, you will be able to generate a special Clover thank you, so you can share with your guests exactly how their gifts made your wish come true and also helped others in need. You'll also receive an email from Clover by Clover confirming the close of your page. You always will be able to view your closed pages when you log into your Account.
- How will I know how much to share with my cause?
Start by thinking about the special gift you really want, and remember: it's your celebration, and you are making a wonderful choice to share your gifts with a great cause! Then, estimate the number and $ amount of gifts you expect to receive to determine if your wish will be fulfilled. We encourage you to be realistic in your expectations. For example:
- a child who has his heart set on a $175 scooter, and is expecting 20 guests to give an average gift of $20 can expect to collect a total of $360 in gift proceeds net of handling fees. If he chooses to share 50% of his gift proceeds with his cause, his wish will be fulfilled and his cause will receive $180.
- a teenager who has her heart set on an $600 tablet computer for her high school graduation may be expecting 50 guests at her party, each giving an average gift of $25. If she chooses to share 45% of the gift proceeds net of handling fees, her dream will come true and her cause also will receive more than $500.
- How do I notify my guests that I have created a page?
Simply direct them to cloverbyclover.com and ask them to search for your name in the search box! You also can:
- Include a link to your page (you will receive this upon creation of your page) in an online invitation (like an eVite).
- Include the message “Instead of bringing a gift to my party, please see my special request at cloverbyclover.com” on a paper invitation.
- Send an email to your friends and family, sharing with them your choice to celebrate thoughtfully, and including a link to your page.
- How will my guests know how much to give?
The default gift amount per single transaction is $25 because we consider this to be a generous amount. However, hosts may remove this limitation if they like (as we realize that there may be special occasions for which a larger gift is appropriate).
- How do I know when someone has given a gift to my page?
You can login to view the status of your pages: the date and amount of each gift are displayed. In addition, when you view your page, you will be able to see all of the comments and good wishes left by friends and family.
- What if I don't get enough money for my special gift?
You still will receive the percentage of gifts you chose to keep, and can apply these dollars towards the purchase of your special gift.
- Where does the money go when people give a gift to my page?
The money goes into a special account at JP Morgan Chase & Co. This account has been set up “for the benefit of Clover by Clover Gift Recipients, Hosts and causes Only” and funds cannot be transferred out of this account for any purpose other than to disburse funds to gift recipients, hosts and causes. When you close your page, you will receive gift funds in the form of a physical check. Causes receive their funds on the 15th of the month following the close of the pages that have indicated them as a cause.
- Does Clover by Clover purchase the special gift I indicate?
No, we do not purchase or ship your special gift. However, when you close your page, we will send you the funds you have collected – equal to the percentage of total gifts collected (net of handling fees) you chose to keep.
- When will I receive the money to purchase my special gift?
We will issue your check 3 business days after you have closed your page.
- How much can I raise for my cause?
As much as you want! Share your page with friends and family across the nation – your “Auntie Best-Of-All” in Boston, your Grandpa in Salt Lake City, your cousins in Los Angeles – loved ones who may not be able to attend your party, but still want to participate in your special occasion in a meaningful way.
- When will my page be active? When will my page close?
Your page is active as soon as you receive confirmation via email from Clover by Clover. Guests can start viewing and giving gifts to your live page immediately after and your page will remain active until you close it. To close your page, just login, go to your account and view the page you would like to close. Look for the "Close Page" tab and click on it. You will be asked if you are sure you want to close it, and prompted to re-enter your account password before you can proceed with the closing process.
- Are pages just for kids' birthdays?
Absolutely not! The beauty of the page is in its versatility. You can create a page for any special event, for anyone, regardless of age or occasion.
- Can I edit my page after I've published it?
You cannot change your cause or the percentage of gifts that you wish to share, once you have created your page. However, you can edit the message on your page, change the photo, or the date of the event. Just login to your account and go to "My Pages" to edit any of your current pages.
- What happens if my special celebration is cancelled or postponed?
If your special celebration is postponed, just log into your account, update your event details and notify your guests. If your special celebration is cancelled, we will be more than happy to return the gifts to each of your guests at no cost to you. If you already have closed your page, your gifts will have already been distributed to the gift recipient and to your cause, so it is up to you to return any gifts made to your page.
- Who do I contact if there is a problem?
Contact us, and right away! Our customers are our business and we want to make sure you have a positive experience using Clover by Clover. If you have any problems with the site, please don't hesitate to send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 1-877-423-0217. We will try our best to solve your problem as quickly as possible, so that your special celebration goes off without a hitch. We want you to feel great about your choice to celebrate thoughtfully.
- What about income taxes on the gifts received through my page?
Gift recipients or their parents/legal guardians will be responsible for declaring any gift proceeds distributed to them on behalf of friends and family via Clover by Clover, as required by the IRS. As all gifts distributed to causes are done so in the name of the gift recipient or his/her parent/legal guardian, the tax deduction for the gift accrues accordingly. Upon receipt of the funds from your celebration, your cause will send you an acknowledgement and tax receipt.
- How do I find a friend's page?
It's easy. Just go to cloverbyclover.com and use our search engine. You can search by your friend's first or last name.
- How do I know how much to give? Do I need to give more than I would normally spend on a gift, since everything is being shared with a great cause?
You should give any amount you feel comfortable with. Gifts amounts are not known to anyone other than the recipient.
- Where does the money go when I give a gift to a page?
The money goes into a special Customer Funds Account at JP Morgan Chase & Co NA.
- Is the Clover by Clover web site secure?
Yes. Our website is secured by Verisign.com and is PCI compliant, so you can feel confident when using your credit card. We also have a Turbo SSL certificate in place that tests our security daily.
- Do you store my personal or credit card information?
- If I give to a page, will I be able to send a card?
Yes. There is a card in .pdf format that guests can download, personalize and bring to the party or send via email. Guests also have the opportunity to leave a comment in the Guest Book.
- Are gifts to a page tax-deductible?
When guests give gifts to a page, they are really giving a gift to their friend who has chosen to share with a non-profit cause. The total raised for a cause through a page is a donation in the name of the Gift Recipient or his/her parent/guardian. The cause will issue a receipt for tax purposes to the celebrant.
- How do I get my receipt?
After you give a gift, you will be emailed an acknowledgment of your gift amount. This email will also have a link to the page you just gave to, so you can revisit it and view comments others have made. No portion of your gift is tax deductible as the donation will be made in the name of the celebrant, who will be acknowledged directly by the charitable organization they selected.
- What about sales taxes?
Gift givers are not required to pay sales tax on their gifts to a page, as they are not receiving a physical product as a result of the transaction.
