Twice a week for ten weeks, highly trained Girls on the Run coaches lead small teams of girls, grades 3-8, through the program’s customized curriculum which teaches life skills and strategies through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. A recent study has shown that the program inspired a long-term impact. Overall Girls on the Run transforms girls’ lives by helping them increase in self-confidence, develop healthy relationships and feel good about themselves.
Girls on the Run is the only national girl-focused organization that combines physical activity and positive youth development in the country. We provide a high quality, life-defining experience so our girls feel safe, heard, and loved. Girls on the Run of the Bay Area is one of the largest independent councils of Girls on the Run serving Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties. This school year we will serve 2,500 girls and at 165 schools. Since our founding in 2002, we have served 17,000 Bay Area girls.
Studies show that age 8-14 is a critical period of time for girls:
• Self-confidence begins to drop by 9
• Girls 10-13 experience bullying
• Physical activity declines at 10 and continues to decrease
By the end of the 10-week program:
• 80% of girls report that exercise is an important part of being healthy
• 75% of girls report that what you eat can affect your health
• 90% of the girls’ parents state the program helped their daughter form healthier habits
Every girl is inherently full of power and potential. Discovering they are the leaders of their own lives empowers girls to change the world.
